In Grade 6 Core French, students must write in a "variety" of forms. Currently, students are completing an organizer to write an email to the organizers of Le Festival du Voyageur (in Winnipeg, Manitoba). Students must state a minimum of 3 things they know about the festival, and ask 2 questions.
Now that the organizers are completed, students will peer- and self-assess their plans using a checklist. Next, students will make improvements to their work and complete their neat copies. (Picture below: this is how we practised asking questions about a festival. Students were shown a logo/advertisement for a French-Canadian festival and had to generate questions about it).

In Grade 6 students are learning about French culture in Canada (outside of Québec and Ontario!). We have been studying a Franco-Manitobain festival called Le Festival du Voyageur (what can you eat? hear? see? do? at this festival). Here are some examples of the things we've been learning. Not all of these activities/foods can be found at Le Festival du Voyageur, but they can all be found at Franco-Canadian festivals! This week we're reading about Le Festival du Voyageur. Students are using a variety of reading strategies (looking at images and matching to the text, focusing on words you know and to get the overall meaning of a text - you don't need to know EVERY word, creating a list of new vocabulary for reference...). Below is a video we watched showing the 2018 Festival du Voyageur in Winnipeg (Saint-Boniface), Manitoba. Students are learning the French names of provinces & territories of Canada. Today (Tuesday 8th January) students shaded in their maps of Canada in blue & red to indicate where they predict there are more French/English speaking Canadians.
Students compared their maps to a population distribution map, showing that most French-speaking Canadians are in Eastern Ontario, Quebec, the Maritimes, and parts of Manitoba and Alberta. Today (Monday December 3rd) students were introduced to vocabulary (verbs) to create an action plan. Students will choose an activity or subject area that they are passionate about, choose a hero in that field, and create an action plan to become like their hero. (e.g. My passion is cooking. My hero is Gordon Ramsey. To be a professional chef like Gordon Ramsey, I must learn how to cook, practice often, and check my progress / Ma passion c'est cuisiner. Mon héros est Gordon Ramsey. Pour être un chef de cuisine professionel comme Gordon Ramsey, je dois apprendre à faire la cuisine, pratiquer souvent, et vérifier mon progres). See vocabulary sheet below (students have this page, completed, in their notes): Grade 6 students have been working hard to learn new vocabulary to describe their passions! As a whole-class activity, we brainstormed different activities that matched 5 categories: -Les arts -La nature -Les sports -Les mots -Les Sciences & La Technologie Students identified their passion from the 5 options above, and explained the different activities that interest them in that specific category. They wrote their ideas on an index card, with pictures to help their audience understand what they've written. These index cards are now on display in the classroom. |
UnitsFebruary - continuing Unit "D'UN OCÉAN À L'AUTRE": learning about French in Canada OUTSIDE OF Ontario & Quebec (Northern, Western, and Eastern Canada), writing an email about Le Festival du Voyageur, learning about different French-cultural celebrations in the different provinces - creating an advertisement for one of the festivals.
